BOAT BUYER REPRESENTATION

Buy the boat with someone on your side.

Buying a boat should be exciting. Having an experienced professional alongside you helps keep the important decisions clear, from the first shortlist to the day you take ownership.

Maritime Expert helps you assess the options, ask better questions and organise the next steps, with support agreed around your boat, budget and plans.

START WITH THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

An attractive boat isn’t always a sensible purchase.

The photographs look convincing. The specification sounds right. But will the boat suit the way you actually plan to use it?

A weekend cruiser, a family day boat and a boat for longer passages ask different things of an owner. Berthing, access, machinery, maintenance and eventual resale all deserve attention before an offer becomes a commitment.

We start with your intended use and an overall budget that allows for ownership as well as purchase. An agreed buying brief gives us a practical way to compare candidates, challenge assumptions and recognise when it is better to keep looking.

SUPPORT AT THE STAGE YOU NEED

A clearer route from shortlist to ownership.

You may already have found a boat, be comparing several, or want help shaping the search. Choose a defined piece of work or agree continuing support through the purchase.

Assess the shortlist

Review adverts, specifications and available maintenance information against your brief. Identify missing details and questions worth answering before committing to travel or inspections.

View and negotiate

Arrange viewing assistance, discuss practical concerns and use available evidence to inform an offer. We help you separate a negotiable issue from a reason to pause or walk away.

Plan the handover

Think beyond completion: immediate maintenance, equipment, berth arrangements, delivery and familiarisation. Agree the next steps so the boat’s arrival leads to enjoyable ownership.

TANGIBLE HELP, AGREED IN ADVANCE

Know what you are paying for.

Your quotation sets out the tasks, location, deliverables, travel arrangements and fees. A single viewing appointment is a different instruction from support across several boats or an extended purchase.

Depending on that agreement, your brief can include:

  • A review of the shortlist and questions for the seller or broker.
  • Viewing notes and photographs of accessible areas, with practical observations.
  • An explanation of concerns that need a surveyor, engineer or other specialist.
  • Coordination of access, inspections and sea-trial arrangements.
  • Discussion of findings, repair quotations and purchase priorities.
  • An agreed handover, delivery or owner-training plan.

Look at the whole cost

An asking price is only the starting point. An apparently cheaper boat may need immediate servicing, transport, covers, electronics or substantial work before it suits your plans.

We help you identify the costs to investigate and obtain specialist quotations where needed. Estimates remain subject to the information available; a viewing cannot expose every hidden defect.

EXPERIENCE THAT CONNECTS THE DECISIONS

Buying, operating and understanding boats.

Steve Frankland brings experience in professional vessel operation, marine surveying, commercial boat trading and practical instruction. He founded Boatbreakers in 2000, later developed BuyAnyBoat and appeared in four seasons of Scrap Kings.

That breadth is useful at the buying stage. A boat can look appealing on a sales pontoon yet prove awkward to berth, expensive to maintain or unsuitable for the owner’s intended use. The discussion needs to connect condition, practicality and cost.

Steve’s background as a Master Mariner, Yachtmaster Ocean and Advanced Powerboat and Motorboat Instructor also brings the handover into focus: how you will operate and enjoy the boat once it is yours.

HOW WE WORK TOGETHER

Five steps. A clear brief at every stage.

  1. Tell us what you are considering. Share your plans, budget, location and any adverts you have found.
  2. Agree the appointment. We define the support, deliverables and fees before work begins.
  3. Investigate the candidates. Review information, arrange viewings and identify the questions that need specialist attention.
  4. Make your decision. Consider the findings, costs and options. You retain control of the offer and the final purchase.
  5. Prepare for ownership. Arrange the agreed handover, onward movement and practical tuition.

BUYING FROM A DISTANCE

Keep the purchase moving without attending every appointment.

When a boat is some distance away, useful information matters more than a stream of reassuring messages. An agreed visit can give you photographs, practical observations and questions to resolve before you make the next journey.

For purchases in Ireland, the UK or Spain, tell us where the boat is and what needs doing. Attendance and local specialist support are confirmed for the particular assignment. We do not assume that every location or service is available.

Think beyond the signature

Where will you keep the boat? What work needs doing first? Who will explain its systems and help you settle into using it?

We can discuss delivery arrangements and handover and familiarisation as part of the plan. Any Spanish on-water work remains subject to confirmed availability, operating requirements and insurance.

BEFORE YOU APPOINT US

Questions buyers ask.

Do I need this if a broker is already involved?

A broker can provide information, arrange access and progress a sale. Our appointment focuses on your brief and the practical questions you want answered. We work constructively with the seller’s representatives while keeping the agreed buyer-side role clear.

Does a viewing replace a full survey?

No. Viewing assistance and preliminary observations do not constitute a full condition survey or guarantee. A suitably qualified surveyor, machinery specialist and other advisers should be appointed where the boat and transaction require them.

Can you negotiate on my behalf?

Negotiation support can be included in the instruction, using the available information and your agreed priorities. You approve any offer or commitment. We do not guarantee a discount, a successful purchase or a particular resale value.

How much does buyer representation cost?

Fees depend on the boat’s location, the number of candidates, travel and the work required. We provide a quotation before starting. Specialist inspections, yard charges and other third-party costs are identified separately rather than assumed to be included.

What if you have a commercial interest in the boat?

Steve’s related trading interests, including BuyAnyBoat, are disclosed where relevant to a proposed transaction. Any seller relationship, referral payment or other potential conflict is explained before you appoint us. If it cannot be managed appropriately, we will not take on that buyer-side assignment.

Do you handle legal ownership, tax and registration?

We can help identify the questions and coordinate with the appropriate advisers within the agreed brief. Legal title, contracts, tax, customs and registration require advice from suitably qualified specialists. Our practical support does not replace their work.

ALREADY FOUND A BOAT?

Send the advert. Tell us what you have in mind.

Include a link to the boat, its location, your intended use and where you are in the buying process. If you are still searching, tell us your budget and the kind of boating you want to do.

We will discuss whether we can help and recommend an appropriate scope before you commit to the work.
