Boat Sourcing and Buying Assistance in Spain

Find a boat that suits your plans, your budget and the way you will actually use it. Work with Steve Frankland to turn a search across Spain into a considered shortlist and a practical ownership plan.

Start with your life on the water

Buying a boat in Spain should start with the trips you want to make. A family day boat near Alicante calls for a different brief from a cruiser for the Balearics or a motorboat kept on the Atlantic coast. Your experience, crew, berth and time in Spain all influence the right choice.

We help define those requirements before you become attached to a particular advert. We consider usable space, boarding, shade, sea conditions, machinery, maintenance support and the cost of keeping the boat ready.

The aim is a shortlist you can explain and compare, with the questions that matter answered before you commit.

What boat sourcing can include

  • A written purchase brief covering use, location, specification and overall budget.
  • Searching and screening advertised boats against agreed requirements.
  • Requesting photographs, service records, equipment details and seller information.
  • A comparison of shortlisted boats, known concerns and missing evidence.
  • Coordinating viewings, independent surveys and engine inspections.
  • Discussing an offer strategy and assisting with seller or broker communication.
  • Planning servicing, delivery, handover and familiarisation after purchase.

We can begin with a fresh search or review a boat you have already found. The scope and the number of candidates or visits are agreed before work starts.

Look beyond the asking price

Your usable budget needs to include more than the purchase. We help assemble a practical cost picture for inspections, immediate repairs, servicing, berth or storage, insurance and delivery. For a boat sourced outside Spain, the transport and documentation route also needs to be understood.

Claims about ownership, VAT status, customs treatment, registration and outstanding finance need the appropriate evidence. We coordinate the questions and refer legal or tax conclusions to a suitably qualified adviser.

A current advert price is not proof of value. Condition, maintenance history, machinery, specification and the cost of resolving defects can change the buying decision considerably.

Use the right checks before completion

A viewing helps establish whether a boat fits your brief; it does not replace an independent survey. Depending on the vessel, arrange a hull and systems survey, engine diagnostics, sea trial and any specialist inspection recommended by the appointed surveyor.

We help coordinate access, collect outstanding answers and translate the findings into practical choices: proceed, seek further evidence, renegotiate or leave the boat behind. Contract conditions and legal protections should be settled with your legal adviser before signing or paying a deposit.

Support across the Spanish coastline

Our Spain service enquiries extend beyond Jávea / Xàbia and Dénia to the whole mainland coastline and the Spanish islands. We begin with your brief and the location of the purchase or project, then agree how remote research, personal attendance and specialist support should be combined.

  • Costa Blanca and Valencia: Dénia, Jávea, Calpe, Altea, Alicante, Torrevieja and Valencia.
  • Catalonia: Barcelona, the Costa Brava and Costa Daurada.
  • Murcia and eastern Andalusia: Cartagena, the Costa Cálida, Almería and Costa Tropical.
  • Costa del Sol and the southwest: Málaga, Marbella, Estepona, Sotogrande, Cádiz and Huelva.
  • Northern and Atlantic Spain: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque coastline.
  • Balearic and Canary Islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and the Canary Islands, with travel and logistics assessed for each instruction.

Coverage means we welcome and assess enquiries in these areas. It does not imply a staffed office or permanent local representative in every port. On-site visits and local services are confirmed for each project.

Plan the first season before you buy

Confirm that a suitable berth or storage arrangement is actually available. Check local service support for the engines and equipment. Agree what comes with the boat and record the inventory at handover.

After completion, your next instruction may include refit coordination, boat delivery or handover and owner familiarisation. Local attendance and on-water work depend on the agreed location, vessel and service availability.

Buyer representation and trade buying

Maritime Expert’s buying assistance is scoped around your purchase. BuyAnyBoat is a separate trade buying service with its own criteria. If an instruction involves a boat owned by, offered to or being considered by BuyAnyBoat, that interest must be made clear before recommendations are made.

Supporting a client’s purchase or refit does not mean BuyAnyBoat will purchase that boat. We agree the role, fees and any commercial interests at the outset.

Buying a boat in Spain questions

Can you help with a boat advertised by another broker?

Yes. We can work from an advert link and agree the research, questions or viewing support you require.

Can you help choose between buying locally and bringing a boat to Spain?

Yes. We can compare practical routes and coordinate quotations. Tax, customs and registration decisions require advice specific to the boat and owner.

Can you promise a saving on the purchase price?

No. The value of the work is a better-informed decision and an organised process. A suitable boat at a fair price may be a better purchase than a discounted boat with expensive problems.

What should I send first?

Your intended cruising area, budget including preparation costs, preferred boat type, experience and timing. Include advert links if you have a shortlist.

Tell us what you want to achieve

Tell us what you want to buy or improve, where in Spain it will be used, your overall budget and your preferred timing. Send advert links or a project outline if you have them.

We will explain the next useful step and propose a scope of work. Fees, travel and third-party costs are agreed before paid work begins.
